Tips to Transitioning into Independent & Assisted Living

Transitioning into an independent or assisted living community can be intimidating. With a new home, new community and new schedule to adjust to, it is completely understandable for your loved one to be a bit nervous. This is why we’ve put together a few tips to help make it easier. Check out these tips on transitioning into senior living.

Tip 1: Take Them For a Tour of the Community

Before your loved one moves into an independent or assisted living community, stop by for a visit and check the place out. This is the perfect time to ask questions and learn a bit about the residents, staff and environment. Things to pay attention to when touring a senior living community include:
  • Cleanliness: does the community look and smell clean?
  • Staff friendliness: does the staff seem welcoming and caring? Are they interacting with residents?
  • Outdoor areas: are there safe and secure outdoor areas for activities or visits?

Bonus Tip: Visit during an event to see some of the fun activities the community has to offer.

Tip 2: Schedule Regular Times to Visit

The first few months in a new home can be difficult. Help your loved one transition into an independent or assisted living community by scheduling regular visits. Seeing family or friends a few times a week can help ease anxieties and make him or her feel more at home.

Tip 3: Help Your Loved One Get Active in Community Events

Talk to your loved one about making the most out of their move and getting involved. Independent and assisted living communities offer many fun activities and programs to help keep seniors active and help them make new friends. Check out the community’s activities schedule and find an event that you know your loved one will enjoy. If he or she seems hesitant, offer to join in on the fun.

Let the staff know if your loved one has an interest or hobby that they love. Staff members may be able to help coordinate an event to get other residents involved.
